With the economy heating up, companies are more likely to begin hiring full time again. So, you just signed up for a two-month position with a great company – one where you would like to work full time. Now what? You got your foot in the door, so now it’s time to make the most of this opportunity and get the full time position that you want. Just this week we saw a candidate go from a one-month contract to a full time position (in a more senior role than the temporary opportunity) with a great company. Here are some hints that can help you make this leap yourself.
Think of the contract as a prolonged interview to a full time position
Be on time every day and be friendly to everyone (nothing says “hire me!” like a friendly attitude)
Don’t assume the company knows that you are interested in a full time position. Speak with your manager and let them know you are looking more long-term. (You have to earn the offer!)
Be Communicative with your Manager
One of the first things you should do is set up an open line of communication with your superior. One example is to set up recurring (Daily? Weekly? Depends on your manager.) status updates of projects and your current timeline to completion. Sometimes nightly updates of what you completed during the workday and your plan for the following day is an opportunity to let your manager know if you are on the right track.
There is no such thing as “over-communication”. But make sure you are effectively communicating in a clear and concise pattern. The better your communication skills are, the more likely you will be considered for a full time role.
Be Visible. Be Available
When you are on contract, make sure that you are returning emails and phone calls in a timely manner.
If you are supposed to be working at your desk, be at your desk. If every time the boss drops by, she finds you working diligently, she will believe you to be a hard worker, and is more likely to recommend you be brought on full time. Perception is everything! If they walk by consistently and you happen to be elsewhere (even for legitimate business reasons), it makes them wonder. Wondering leads to seeds of doubt and this can negatively impact your chances of being hired.
Be Available. If they ask you to work some overtime, say yes. If one month of overtime turns into a full time position, it will be well worth those extra hours.
