Bitesize Bio podcast tackles mental health stigma in the scientific community

Edinburgh (UK), York (UK), and Jena (Germany): Bitesize Bio, the University of York, and ZEISS Microscopy have released a special episode of The Microscopists podcast. The episode highlights mental health issues within the research community in an attempt to help those struggling and ensure those around them are better resourced.

Bitesize Bio is an online community that aims to foster knowledge-sharing and collaboration in science. The firm produces The Microscopists podcast, which is presented by Dr Peter O’Toole (President of the Royal Microscopical Society, Director of the Bioscience Technology Facility and Head of Imaging and Cytometry at the University of York) and sponsored by leading optics and optoelectronics enterprise ZEISS. So far, the podcast has generated over 250,000 plays across all podcast streaming platforms.

In this special episode, Dr Peter O’Toole interviews two internationally renowned researchers, Dr Beth Cimini (Senior Group Leader at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard) and Dr Kedar Narayan (Group Leader at the Center for Molecular Microscopy), about their experiences with depression. They are later joined by Jason Rodgers (Podcast Producer at Bitesize Bio and Postgraduate Researcher at Liverpool John Moores University), who shares his experience with debilitating anxiety.

The three researchers speak candidly about their mental health struggles and the impact on their work. By encouraging an open dialogue, the episode aims to inspire cultural change and practical support for mental health in scientific research environments. The discussion also highlights the fact that mental health problems can affect scientists at all stages of their careers.

“The pressures of working in research are well-known, but the mental health consequences are not widely spoken about,” said Dr Nick Oswald, Founder and Director of Bitesize Bio. That’s why, at Bitesize Bio, we don’t just focus on improving technical skills; we have championed researchers’ well-being and mental health for over 15 years and set out to raise awareness of the harms that can result from the pressures of the research environment.”

“I thought this was a really important topic to cover, and credit should go to Beth, Kedar, and Jason for being brave and open to discussing their history, especially as, for some, this was the first time that they had spoken about it,” said Dr Peter O’Toole. “Despite being a very serious issue, the guests kept things entertaining and, at times, light-hearted. It shows that mental health issues do not need to get in the way of being highly successful scientists. It was great to hear how they, or those around them, realized that they needed to seek support,” he continued.

“The Microscopists podcast always inspires candid, fun, and engaging conversations,” said Daniel Hartmann, Marketing Specialist for Microscopy in the Life Sciences at ZEISS. “While this episode tackles a more serious topic, I hope it will encourage listeners to seek help if they are struggling.”

This podcast episode sheds light on the challenges of scientific research and marks a significant effort towards reducing the stigma associated with mental illnesses. It also reflects a broader commitment by Bitesize Bio, the University of York, and ZEISS to champion research environments where researchers can thrive professionally and personally. As mental health continues to be a global concern, initiatives like these highlight the importance of support systems and open communication in mental health recovery.

The Microscopists Mental Health Special with Beth Cimini, Kedar Narayan, and Jason Rodgers is available now on the Bitesize Bio website and all popular podcast platforms.
