Why we built a community to help bioscientists do science better

The Beginning:
A Frustration with the Status Quo

Science is built on discovery, but too often, the most valuable knowledge—hard-won insights from years at the bench—gets lost.

For researchers, learning the ropes of the craft often means figuring things out the hard way. While textbooks and papers provide theory, the practical knowledge that comes from experience—how to troubleshoot an experiment, optimize protocols, or navigate a scientific career—tends to come from direct mentoring, which is not universally available.

On the other hand, mentors have the wisdom to share but lack a way to reach those who need it most. They spend years mastering their craft, yet their how-to insights are typically only shared within their own lab.

And for life science companies, there is a growing challenge—how to meaningfully connect with researchers in a way that adds value, rather than just selling products.

Scientists need a way to share mentoring knowledge and grow together.

Building a Community of Shared Scientific Wisdom

Bitesize Bio was born from the belief that scientists need more than textbooks, journals, and institutional training to thrive. They also need to learn how-to wisdom directly from those who have been there before.

Our founder, Nick Oswald, had this in mind back in 2007 when he launched BitesizeBio.com as his own personal blog.

His idea was to share his own hard-won know-how on topics like how to improve DNA ligations, how SDS-PAGE works, how to deal with an awkward boss, and much more.

Researchers loved it. They joined to get more. Some volunteered to add their own mentoring expertise to the mix. And the community began.

The Community: Growing Together, One Insight at a Time

We wondered: What if we could democratize mentor knowledge so that every bioscientist—regardless of their experience level—could access real-world wisdom from hundreds of mentors?

We envisioned a community-driven platform where:

  • Researchers could find practical, experience-based knowledge to improve their science and careers.
  • Mentors could share their expertise with thousands of scientists worldwide, gaining recognition and influence.
  • Life science companies could engage meaningfully with their audience—not just by advertising but by contributing real value.

We started by sharing the insights that scientists couldn’t find elsewhere—the troubleshooting guides, the career advice, the small-but-crucial details that can make or break an experiment. And bioscientists responded.

With every article, webinar, and discussion, Bitesize Bio grew into a thriving grassroots community powered by scientists helping scientists. Today, our platform:

  • Connects thousands of researchers across the world.
  • Hosts expert-led content that tackles real-world lab challenges.
  • Provides a stage for mentors to share their hard-earned knowledge.
  • Helps life science companies engage authentically with the researchers rather than just selling products.

The Mission: Making Science More Effective for Society

At Bitesize Bio, our team’s mission is simple: help bioscientists do science better.

But this isn’t just about improving research—it’s about improving the lives of those who dedicate themselves to science. By creating a supportive, knowledge-sharing ecosystem, we’re also:

  • Making research more efficient by helping scientists learn from experience, not just literature.
  • Strengthening scientific rigor by promoting transparency and real-world problem-solving.
  • Improving the experience of doing science—because when scientists feel supported, they can focus on discovery.

Join our Movement

We believe that scientific wisdom should be free, open, and accessible. Whether you’re a bioscientist looking for answers, a mentor ready to share your knowledge or a company that wants to truly support the research community, there’s a place for you at Bitesize Bio.

Let’s make science better—together.
