Critical Analysis Of Research Papers

The mindset of a scientist should always be skeptical — of ther own work, and that of their peers. Does the evidence hold up? Can additional experiments be done to test the hypothesis? Are there any holes in the data? Criticial analysis of research papers is therefore a crucial tool in your toolbox as a scientist. This module will give you a system for critically analysing the manuscripts published by your peers and drawing your own conclusions based on the data shown. It will also provide you with real life examples that will put the system in context. In later courses we will be launching a weekly “Advanced Journal Club” which will enable you to routinely hone these skills by getting involved in group discussions where this system will be applied to selected manuscripts.

How To Critically Analyze A Research Paper

You scour all the scientific databases to find articles related to your topic and you finally find the one that fills in the missing gaps. But how can you tell if the article contains reliable and reproducible science? In this session, you will develop a systematic method to critically analyze scientific papers to fully understand their results and limitations.

In this session you will learn:

  • The things to first examine when reading a scientific paper
  • How to develop your own checklist to quickly verify the rigor of a paper
  • What you should do if you need more information from a paper
