Stabilization of RNA in bifidobacteria (gram positive)

asked by by on

I’m having problems with RNA degradation when sending samples for microarray analysis. I’m using RNAprotect bacteria from qiagen to stablize the RNA in the bacteria before sending off bacterial pellets for processing. RNA degradation has happened in the last 2 sets of samples that I’ve sent. I think the problem may be that I’m pelleting at 4 degrees celsius, and this may be preventing the reagent from penetrating the cells. Does anyone have any tips or pointers?

Thanks very much!

I don’t know if it is the same but Biomatrica (US) has a similar product. Perhaps this one performs better than the Qiagen product. They should be able to provide a sample.
