Inkscape is like Adobe Illustrator but free. That means you can explore without having to ask your PI for funds. It does everything you’d want Illustrator to do.
I second Harley that Inkscape is great especially for drawing your own diagrams such as models. However if it is for putting together figures of your own data I much prefer the GNU image manipulation program (also called GIMP). Like Inkscape this software is completely free, but it is a bitmap graphics program (which most people’s data such as western blot images will be). GIMP also has a similar feel to Adobe Photoshop if you are familiar with that software.
GNU image manipulation program is the best. If you have VM ware you can instantly switch to Linux and windows. For basic drawing you can use MS paint tools and afterward import the same drawing to GIMP and the articulation is limitless there. Even you can generate your own animated gif files through GIMP.

Please, please, stop using Powerpoint.
