In the lab, there are several techniques and instruments for sterilizing our equipment, including autoclaves, solvents and UV light irradiation.
Each has its pros and cons, but sometimes you just want to be able to quickly sterilize your equipment with minimum fuss and maximum safety.
That’s where the CoolCLAVE™, the autoclave’s sexy cousin, comes to the rescue. The CoolCLAVE™ is a stylish and compact laboratory bench top sterilizer that can sterilize and deodorize your laboratory tools, including pipettes, pipette tips, small bench top centrifuges, gloves, etc quickly, safely and effectively.
How it Works
The CoolCLAVE™ is very safe and easy to use, and does not rely on heat, steam or chemicals that can damage equipment and be dangerous for the user. Instead, the CoolCLAVE™ harnesses the oxidative power of ozone to destroy over 98% of contaminating pathogens, including viruses, bacteria, and fungi, by disrupting their cellular structure. Ozone sterilization is routinely used industry, but the CoolCLAVE™ brings it to the bench.
The CoolCLAVE™ in action
- Unlike ethanol, ozone does not corrode surfaces, or release harmful vapors. Ozone is safe to use on all metals and plastics and it is converted to harmless oxygen during the sterilization process. The CoolCLAVE™also makes sure that any possible ozone leakage would be at least 5 times below the OSHA’s Permissible Exposure Limit of 0.1 ppm, so it poses no danger to the user.
- Unlike UV light, it is able to penetrate deep into the nooks and crannies of lab instruments to destroy bacteria and eliminate contaminating odors.
- Unlike autoclaving it is quick (the cycle takes less than 8 minutes) and it is gentle; even paper and agar plates can be sterilized.
Easy on the Eyes, Easier to Use
The stylish CoolCLAVE™ has sleek lines and colorful chamber LEDS. The only button on the front of the instrument is the start button (you can’t get simpler than that!) and pushing it initiates an 8-minute sterilizing cycle, the progress of which will be shown by the cycle indicator.
An 8-minute cycle is generally sufficient for lightly contaminated items. During each 8-minute cycle, sterilizing and deodorizing air is circulated in the CoolCLAVE™ chamber to decontaminate and deodorize your wares. Typically, you would run the CoolCLAVE™ for 2 to 3 cycles to get the best cleaning effectiveness. It is also very easy to maintain, requiring cleaning its cartridge every 3 months.
Another cool feature of CoolCLAVE™ is its compact size – it has an incredibly small footprint with dimensions (W x D x H) of 12? x 14? x 9? inches, and weighting only 14 lbs. It is a lightweight contender.
Any Drawbacks?
So what are the limitations of this wonderful gadget? Well, CoolCLAVE™ is not meant to be a substitute for an autoclave, and as such it is not able to sterilize liquids or solutions. Also, while CoolCLAVE™ can eliminate most surface contaminants, it should not be used to sterilize equipment for use in medical or surgical applications of any kind.
Add the CoolCLAVE™ to your Bench
The CoolCLAVE™ is a convenient and effective bench top accessory for keeping your bench top equipment sterile with minimal fuss, cost or danger to you or your equipment. It looks great sitting in its small footprint on your bench and is certainly a sleek and smart gadget to add to your arsenal for keeping your lab clean and odor-free.
