After a number of years in a former role at a major life science company, I always noted that the best scientists were the ones who made sure they circulated the stands – the ones who attracted students in universities and the ones who were the movers. Then there are the ones who stand dead centre of the lanes – dead centre so they are no closer to one stand on one side, nor the the stand on the other side so as to be seen to be completely disinterested. A lot of those scientists were in government roles who had been in the same job for years. They were going nowhere - not towards stands and new developments, nor anywhere career-wise

A complete generalization but that was my interpretation!

Thanks Bill for your comment.

Joanne- very true. It is an aspect of attending conferences that attendees probably are not aware of. That's why the conference bag is stuffed with flyers and cards to trying to entice people to visit their booths and see what's new.
And the nicer the weather outside, the less traffic in the exhibit hall!
No marketing can overcome the persuasive power of mother nature.

Another good reason to visit Exhibitors is that they are the ones subsidizing the congress -- without their financial support, the congress organizers would not be able to offer attendees such low registration fees. If the exhibitors stop coming to the scientific meetings because not enough people come into the exhibit hall, then the cost of attending for scientists will become prohibitive.

I agree. As an Executive Recruiter specializing in life science capital equipment, trade shows are one of my favorite ways of finding good quality people. Plus I usually fly out shows like Pittcon and Lab Automation a couple days early and bring my golf clubs. Hitting these shows several times during the winter months lowers my handicap a few strokes each spring.
