Attending seminars is extremely important. While I agree learning how criticism and counterargument strengthen your work, I think there are many other benefits from attending seminars.
Often new ideas are born from listening to someone in an unrelated area and applying the same or similar concepts to your own work. Another good reason to attend seminars is to see first hand what public speaking skills are most effective. What about the benefit of networking. You have the chance to meet many people when you sit in a large auditorium, make it a point to meet the people sitting near you. And don't forget about virtual seminars--many presentations (NIH Videocasts are an excellent) are recorded and you can learn and network in your "downtime". I couldn't agree more--TAKE ADVANTAGE of all the opportunities to expand your professional career.
